Uma Chine is a Belgian band and the project of Nele De Gussem (Maya’s Moving Castle, Future Old People Are Wizards). She gathered some of the best musicians of the Ghent jazz- and pop scene around her to form a band in which roots and electronic music are combined - confronting the hUman with the maChine.
“Angelo Badalamenti (Twin Peaks) on a diet of electric guitars and ethereal women’s voices” (De Standaard)
Nele De Gussem studied guitar and soon put emphasis on contemporary experiment. She played in bands like Maya’s Moving Castle and Future Old People Are Wizards, focussing more and more on synthesizers.
In Uma Chine she combines these influences, supported by the sisterly timbres of Rana and Sherien Holail Mohamed’s voices and musicians Simon Raman (drums - Ivy Falls, Steiger), Nils Vermeulen (bass - Jukwaa) and Koen Quintyn (synth - St. Grandson).
Uma Chine gathered for the first time in 2017, soon playing a support for Mauro Pawlowski and invited to play on the main stage of the biggest event in their hometown, the Gentse Feesten. Spring 2018 they played at Handelsbeurs, Ghent.
